Manhattan is home to some of the greatest bars in the world (of course, I may be a little biased). You never know what a night may bring. In fact, I just learned of a mind-blowing story that started with some friends hanging out in an NYC bar.

In 1967, Marine veteran John Donohue was chatting with a local bartender about war, anti-war protests and the soldiers fighting in Vietnam. The idea of a beer run came up, and Donohue ran with it, all the way to Vietnam. He literally got a job on a merchant vessel, and with a backpack full of booze, trekked his way through Vietnamese jungles and battlefields wearing Hawaiian-print shirts for months.

Upon his return to the US, many people didn’t believe what he’d done, but he published a memoir in 2017. Believe it or not, it’s an incredible story, one that garnered the interest of Oscar-winning director Peter Farrelly, who is now set to shoot “The Greatest Beer Run Ever”, a war movie about guts, friendship and loyalty. It will be made as an Apple Original Film, with a star cast including Zac Efron, Russel Crowe and Bill Murray.

With Green Book ranking high on my all-time favorite list, I can’t wait to watch this! In the meantime, I may make my way over to Inwood to check out the real-life scene that inspired it all. What are some of your favorite haunts in the area?
